School Counseling

COVID19 Resources

Hello Walker Family and Community,

As the Walker School Counselor, I utilize the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national model to create an intentional comprehensive school counseling program that ensures the safety and the emotional well-being of our students.

A school counselor supports students in the domains of social-emotional growth, academic performance, and college/career readiness. Counseling services provide social-emotional support through individual and group counseling, core curriculum lessons using the Second Step curriculum and restorative justice practices, and implementing school-wide activities to build a culture of success. Through classroom lessons, I facilitate student discussions on how to focus attention and be good learners, facilitating student support team (SST) meetings, Section 504 plans, and observing classrooms throughout the school year as needed. College and career readiness is taught through career lessons and providing students with the skills to learn and get along with others.

The school counselor is also responsible for facilitating national events such as The Great Kindness Challenge, where students are challenged to complete kindness tasks, and also Red Ribbon Week, where students are educated on the harmful effects of drugs. These lessons are adapted to be developmentally appropriate.

In addition, I coordinate efforts between the school and community partners that benefit students and families. Please view our Walker Family Resource Guide for community resource information.

The school counselor at Walker is a critical role, working to ensure the safety and well being of all Walker students. The social emotional skills developed throughout elementary school will last a lifetime.

Please complete a Walker School Counseling Form (Parent/Guardian/Teacher), if you feel counseling is something the student may benefit from (short-term or one time check in).  First through fifth grade students can also reach out to me, by completing a Counselor Check In Form.  Lastly, you view specific resource information regarding COVID19 Resources.

Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Ashley Mariano, School Counselor
